London to Walsingham walk
Looking for a 7 or 8 day walk from London to Walsingham? Look no further. There are many lovely routes but many are 170-190 miles long and average walkers would struggle to walk them in a week laden with a pack.
This route via Bury St Edmunds is 144 miles including all the twists and turns. Starting on Sunday (say 9am Mass at Westminster Cathedral) and walking an average 20 miles a day gets you to Fakenham on Saturday evening. This allows a leisurely 4 mile walk on Sunday to the Catholic Shrine at Houghton St Giles for the mid day pilgrim Mass (a further 1 mile to Little Walsingham gets you to the Anglican Centre where Mary is also venerated and a range of small town amenities, accommodation etc.).
The return leg is straightforward. A bus back to Fakenham and thence to Norwich from where there is a choice of trains back to London.
The route uses public campsites with all but one boasting showers. The route uses green lanes (Lee Valley Way, The Essex Way and The Peddar Way) and country lanes. There is virtually no main road walking. Click on the Route tab and select the relevant day number to see the detailed route. Use the links to take you to detailed maps on the MapMyWalk website. Clicking the small black 3D icon will allow you to fly over each days' route to give you an Angel eye view.
